News: Dinagat Islands PHO to conduct 'Sweet Smile Lakbay Opera

SAN JOSE, Dinagat Islands, Oct. 20 (PIA) - The provincial government here through the Provincial Health Office (PHO) will conduct a medical outreach program dubbed "Sweet Smile Lakbay Opera" on Oct. 23-25, 2014.

News: Solar Power to Address Mindanao Shortage

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Solar power plants can provide the fastest source of power in Mindanao. That is, if plans push through for its generation among the island’s larger distribution utilities.
In a media presentation on Sept. 14, Cecilio U. Sumaoy, senior manager of the Cagayan Electric Power & Light Co. (Cepalco) system operations department, cited the inherent advantages of solar photovoltaic (PV) plants over thermal and other plants of the same capacity.

State of the Art Municipal Hall of Libjo

Libjo is really proud to present its newly built 2-storey municipal hall with a recreation hall on its rooftop. Its inauguration was done today at 11:30am, February 28, 2011. Meanwhile, a consultative meeting about the upcoming 51st Araw ng Libjo celebration requested by Libjo Mayor Maria Fe Borja- Llamera was held on the same day. Represented by all Department heads, SB Members, Punong Barangays, GO's, NGO's, DEP-ED and Religious Leaders, it was agreed that the said affair will be graced by hired Acrobats, Inter-agency Volleyball tournament and an Open - Battle of the Band. mj

News: Missing Boat With 5 Americans Found in Philippines

The Philippine coast guard on Sunday found a missing US sailboat off a southern island, with its five American passengers safe on board.

The 11.5-metre boat left Guam on January 6 en route to the central Philippine city of Cebu when it went missing.

Coast guard spokesman Commander Armand Balilo said the boat was spotted off the southern island of Dinagat, west of its final destination.

He said contact had been made and a rescue vessel was on the way.

Balilo said four men and one woman were spotted safe inside.

Relatives of the passengers reported the sailboat missing after it failed to reach Cebu by the expected date of January 16. More...from Libjolive.com

News: SC says Dinagat Islands not a Province Anymore

Surigao del Norte (October 22) -- It's final, the Supreme Court (SC) has finally recorded an Entry of Judgment to its decision dated February 10, 2010 nullifying a law that created the province of Dinagat Islands.

In an interview, Atty. Victor Bernal, one of the 3 petitioners said the entry of judgment was already made last May 18, 2010 and that they only received a copy on October 05, 2010 from the Deputy Clerk of Court & Chief, Judicial Records Office of the Supreme Court, Ma. Lourdes C. Perfecto.

"It means that the Supreme Court has affirmed the unconstitutionality of R.A. 9355 which created the province of Dinagat Islands," Bernal said.

The SC maintained that Dinagat Islands did not meet either the land area or the population requirement for the creation of the province. More...

News: Report on Illegal Logging

One motorboat loaded with assorted lumber allegedly owned by Tano Matutis, res of Purok 14, Libjo, Dinagat Islands was intercepted at the sea water, Brgy Poblacion Libjo, Dinagat Islands Province on September 24, 2010 at 9:30 pm by PNP personnel of Libjo MPS led by SPO2 Adolfo Go.

Said motorboat was operated by a certain Marjun Matutis, 20 yrs old, single together with Romy Silikot y Castillon alias Loloy and Chelo Canoy Canonigo alais Eloy, legal age, all single and all res of P-14, Brgy Melody, Libjo, Dinagat Islands Province. Suspects and confiscated lumbers with an estimated volume of 500 board feet were brought to Loreto MPS for proper disposition. Progress report to follows. More

Last February 10, 2010, the Court struck down on constitutional grounds the creation of the Province of Dinagat Island. In its decision the Court said that the Constitution clearly mandates that the creation of local government units must follow the criteria established in the Local Government Code. The Court added that creation of the Province of Dinagat failed to comply with these requirements specifically on the land area requirement and population. News: ‘Substantial’ Nickel Deposits in Dinagat

Studies commissioned by Century Peak Corp. (CPC) have found a significant amount of nickel at its twin mines on Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte.

In a statement, the miner said it estimates 9.9 million dry metric tons of resources with a grade of 1.02 percent nickel at its Casiguran mine. It also cited data showing a measured resource of 9.07 million dry metric tons with a grade of 1.07 percent nickel at its Rapid City Parcel II property, also in Dinagat.

"The reports confirm the vast amount of resources of Dinagat Island, which has been well-known among Philippine geologists," CPC quoted University of the Philippines geologist Carlo A. Arcilla as saying. More...

News: Hijacked Tugboad found in Dinagat

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has stepped up its countermeasures against maritime piracy to help identify and apprehend pirates who hijacked a Singaporean registered tugboat last Feb. 6 in Malaysia.

The hijacked tugboat was found in Philippine waters.

Lieutenant Commander Arman Balilo, PCG spokesman, said the hijacked vessel was found at the vicinity of Barangay Pamanaon, Loreto, Dinagat, Surigao del Norte. More...

News: High Court Voids Law on Dinagat Province

The Supreme Court, by a vote of 9-6 Thursday, nullified the law creating the province of Dinagat Islands and voided the election of its officials.

In a decision penned by Justice Diosdado Peralta, the court en banc said that Dinagat Islands had a land area of only 802.12 sq. km, short of the requirement of 2,000 sq. km.

The court said that Dinagat, with only 106,951 residents, did not meet the population requirement of not less than 250,000 inhabitants. More...

News: Smart Bro’s Project gets NTC okay

SMART Broadband Inc. (SBI), a subsidiary of Smart Communications Inc., was given the go ahead of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) last week to operate a more advanced technology involving data communications in far-flung areas that would cost the cellular firm P341.25 million.

Smart, the NTC said, is financially fit to finance the proposed project, particularly the establishment of a data leased channel circuit network service in the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental, Dinagat Island and Shariff Kabunsuan.

The frequency bandwidths are essential to SBI’s planned deployment of WiMax, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMax is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access.

SBI had told the NTC that there are various services that it could offer to the public using WiMax technology operating on the 700MHz. Among the basic services include broadband Internet, voice over Internet protocol, text messaging, and electronic messaging. More...

News: Suicide Incident in Libjo

On September 16, 2009 at around 11:30 in the morning, Ms. Jean Dialde Sotto, reported to Libjo Municipal Police Station that a female dead body was found hanging inside the room of Mrs. Nery Digman's residence located at Barangay San Antonio, Libjo, Dinagat Islands.

Initial investigation disclosed that the said victim allegedly committed suicide motivated by jealousy from her teenage lover. The remains was brought to Loreto Hospital for post mortem examination. More...

IN A bid to help and cater to the country’s thrust of focusing into renewable-energy projects like wind, Vergnet Group of France is looking at entering possible ventures with a number of local power generators.
