News: Smart Bro’s Project gets NTC okay
SMART Broadband Inc. (SBI), a subsidiary of Smart Communications Inc., was given the go ahead of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) last week to operate a more advanced technology involving data communications in far-flung areas that would cost the cellular firm P341.25 million.
Smart, the NTC said, is financially fit to finance the proposed project, particularly the establishment of a data leased channel circuit network service in the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental, Dinagat Island and Shariff Kabunsuan.

The frequency bandwidths are essential to SBI’s planned deployment of WiMax, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMax is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access.
SBI had told the NTC that there are various services that it could offer to the public using WiMax technology operating on the 700MHz. Among the basic services include broadband Internet, voice over Internet protocol, text messaging, and electronic messaging. More...

News: Suicide Incident in Libjo
On September 16, 2009 at around 11:30 in the morning, Ms. Jean Dialde Sotto, reported to Libjo Municipal Police Station that a female dead body was found hanging inside the room of Mrs. Nery Digman's residence located at Barangay San Antonio, Libjo, Dinagat Islands.
Initial investigation disclosed that the said victim allegedly committed suicide motivated by jealousy from her teenage lover. The remains was brought to Loreto Hospital for post mortem examination. More...

News: Spain Gives 5 Schools to Caraga
Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli A. Lapus flew here recently to receive the ceremonial key for five newly-constructed two-room school buildings donated to the Caraga Region office of DepEd by the Spanish government through its Improvement of the Quality of Primary Education (IQPE) program.

News: Libjo Town Completes 9 Sub-projects Under KALAHI-CIDSS
Hundreds of residents in Libjo, a coastal town in the province of Dinagat Islands rejoiced as nine of its community projects funded last year by the KALAHI-CIDSS Project were inaugurated on April 1, 2 and 3, 2009.
Said infrastructures consist of water system, high school buildings, drainage, health facilities, day care and some hundreds of linear meters of seawall which the residents claimed to be of utmost need in their barangays.
In all of his inauguration speeches delivered in the different recipient barangays, town mayor Lamberto Llamera, Jr. emphasized the stringent but effective processes of KALAHI-CIDSS. He said that through this "tedious" processes, residents who volunteered to work for the project learn and understand how the government worked for its development efforts.
"We have been used to the old system of implementing projects, we love to cut corners to make our projects quick," says Mayor Llamera in Surigaonon dialect. More...

News: New Mountain Rat Found
A NEW species of rat has been found on a mountain in the southern Philippines, the environment department said on Wednesday.
The Hamiguitan batomys, or hairy-tailed rat, is a yellow-brown rodent with a long furry tail. Weighing about 175 grams, it lives 950 metres above sea level in the dwarf mossy forests of Mount Hamiguitan on Mindanao island.
It was discovered in a joint US-Filipino expedition in 2006 that involved experts from the Chicago-based Field Museum of Natural History, the Filipino government agency said in a statement.

News: DPWH offers 1,424 jobs in Caraga
The Regional 13 office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH 13) in Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga Region) is set to open initial 1,424 job openings today, it was learned yesterday.
The job fair will be opened at the DPWH regional office here at 8 a.m. today and those applicants that will pass the criteria will be deployed in Agusan del Norte, Butuan City, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands, it was also learned.
The DPWH 13 needs civil engineers, foremen, laboratory technicians, heavy equipment operators, masons, steelmen, welders, drivers, auto electricians, carpenters, surveyors and construction workers, it was gathered.
In the initial recruitment, at least 898 job openings are available for Agusan del Norte; 341 in Butuan City; 47 in Surigao del Sur and 138 in Dinagat Islands.
The next batch of job openings will be announced by the DPWH regional office soon.

News: 106 Houses Swept Away by Landslides
Some 106 houses were totally destroyed in four provinces in Caraga Region after almost a week of continuous rains that caused swelling of rivers and loosening of the soil in mountainous areas all over the region.
